Cover Story - Holiday Movie Guide 2013

How to stay classy at the cinema this holiday season

There are lots of good reasons to go see movies with your family over the holidays. One of the best is that you don’t have to talk to them for roughly two hours while pretending you’re somewhere else. The problem is, though, if you pick the wrong movie, you’ll actually become more aware of your family’s presence. Instead of feeling like an escape, you’ll feel like you’re stuck in a harrowing two-hour-long awkward silence. Take, for example, The Secret Life of Walter Mitty, a film coming out on Christmas Day that tells the story of an office lackey whose daydreams take him to faraway, picturesque adventures. This is the kind of movie you want to see with your family. On the other hand, there’s The Wolf of Wall Street, a movie that also comes out on Christmas and tells the story of a criminal stockbroker who lives out his wildest fantasies with drugs and prostitutes before losing it all and going to jail. You probably don’t want to watch that with your 10-year-old nephew. We’ve tried to put together a guide to holiday flicks with two kinds of movies: ones to see with your conservative grandparents and others to sneak off to with your cool cousins. Choose wisely.
