Trio Da Kali, Derek Grippers African Strings Project

Red Light Cafe - 553 Amsterdam Ave. N.E. Atlanta, GA 30306 $20-$25. 8 p.m.

The balafon (xylophone) is an unmistakable staple of the West African music. The playful plonking of mallets on hardwood keys, interacting with bass and percussion is a universal invitation to groove. Trio Da Kali features a talented lineup of second generation Malian musicians including Lassana Diabat̩ (balafon), Mamadou Kouyat̩ (ngoni) and singer Hawa Kass̩ Mady Diabat̩. For their first and only Southeastern appearance, the trio performs songs from Ladilikan, a new collaboration with the Kronos Quartet. Lassana Diabat̩’s balafon work and Hawa Kass̩ Mady Diabat̩’s impressive octave range provide a particularly bright ray of light, while Kouyat̩ holds down the rhythm. It’s unfortunate that Kronos Quartet won’t be joining them for this show, but it’s a great opportunity to witness three Malian musical master at the top of their game.
