FRESH TAKE: Jen Kirkman stops by Variety Playhouse on Nov. 3. | Robyn Von Swank

Jen Kirkman’s on a roll. Scratch that, has been on a roll that’s been snowballing her into that upper echelon in comedy few stand-ups reach. The tireless comedian hit another vaunted milestone when she debuted her second stand-up special, Just Keep Livin’?, on Netflix last January. Most comics are lucky to release an album on a such a popular platform let alone a special, but Kirkman is not like most comics.

The unabashed jokesmith is never afraid to speak her mind on anything, and in 2017, that really encompasses everything. While not technically political on stage, for many non-straight white male comics, just being yourself is politics. Kirkman’s comedy is always honest and personal yet told a way that allows her jokes to double as a mirror up to society revealing often-ignored truths. For this, Kirkman’s openness and sharp tongue has earned her a strong fan following. It’s what landed her her first Netflix special, 2015’s I’m Gonna Die Alone (And I Feel Fine), two stand-alone audio albums, and shot her books, 2013’s I Can Barely Take Care of Myself and 2016’s I Know What I’m Doing and Other Lies I Tell Myself (Dispatches From a Life Under Construction, to the top of the New York Times best-seller charts. In between, she laid out her comedic prowess regularly on television on “Chelsea Lately,” “Drunk History,” “@Midnight,” and on the silver screen, most recently in this year’s Home Again. Busy as all hell, Kirkman has proved that she’s, quite-literally, one quick-witted mind.

Kirkman’s been no stranger to Atlanta and swings her way back to town to light up the Variety Playhouse on November 3rd. For a double-dose of excellence, ATL native and local favorite Shalewa Sharpe (Rotknee Presents Records, “Stay Eating Cookies”) will feature. Tickets to this power-duo are on sale now but expected to go quick.

$21. 9p.m. Fri., Nov. 3. Variety Playhouse, 1099 Euclid Ave. N.E. 404-524-7354. www.variety-playhouse.com.
